Renovation or relocation?

Real estate is a game of goal-setting. It’s about understanding where you are today, where you want to be tomorrow, and when it’s the right time to take the leap. But the perfect house for you right now, won’t necessarily suit your lifestyle tomorrow. That’s often when you’re faced with the decision: to renovate or move?

We like to think of the first step to finding the right answer as a first date, but with yourself. We want you to get to know yourself and think about what your unique goals are for the future. Don’t just think about money though. Consider the lifestyle you want to be living in 5, ten or even thirty years.

After your date-for-one, you’ll be in a much better position to weigh up the pros and cons of renovating or moving.

Renovating

Are you already living in your “forever” location? If you’re living somewhere you love — and can imagine loving for years to come — it might be better to stay put and renovate your house to suit the next chapter of your life.

But it’s also super important to consider the cost of renovating your home. Even just giving a property a face-lift can be a big hit to your bank account. And that’s before you consider all the hidden costs that can pop up along the way too.

We will work with you to understand the value of your property, how much you can borrow and the potential return on your investment. Sometimes this means altering the scope of your works slightly or completing the project in stages. It’s our job to ensure you’ve got the tools and knowledge to build a budget that works for you.

Moving

Sometimes it makes more sense financially to turn your home into an investment. If your property is well-located and you can afford to hold onto it, you might consider borrowing against the equity of the property and using it as a deposit for your next home.

Before making this decision, it’s important to weigh up the costs of buying a new home — not just it’s price tag! We’re talking about expenses like stamp duty, conveyancing and removalists too!
